Things I Learned in My Second 20 Years

Directing the Family Portrait

  • Group shaping and architecture
  • Blocking for equitable body size and color
  • Fixing broken arms and legs
  • Stupid tricks to engage children
  • Lighting families on location

Portraits of Character - Octogenarian sessions in Italy

  • Shooting wider and handheld in natural light is a departure for me, and a refreshing one! I'll walk though several portrait sessions of fascinating old Italians I've photographed in recent years, and show you my efforts.

Drake Busath M.Photog, Cr

Drake is best known for an un-affected, believable portrait style. His studios downtown Salt Lake City specialize in portraits of family and portraits for business. Busath Studio & Gardens was named Best of State the past 12 years and 2022 Best in the entire Arts and Entertainment category.

He also operates Italy Workshops since 1999, offering immersive experiences for photographers spring and fall. With a small staff in Italy, he offers photo tours and workshops in several regions of Italy and in France.

Drake’s two worlds are united by a craving for authenticity and character. Whether an official portrait of the Governor or a mechanic in Tuscany, the same sensibility for honest body language and believable light drive his work.
